ANNA FRANCES (FANNIE) CAPPS - Generation No. 2
ANNA FRANCES (FANNIE) CAPPS (MARSHAL PINKNEY) was born Thursday, December 4, 1873, in Matfield Green, Chase County, Kansas. The second child and first daughter of Marshal and Mary [Davenport] Capps, Fannie was born in the Flint Hills of Kansas.
TO ARKANSAS (BY WAY OF MISSOURI AND KANSAS)
Around 1877, the still-growing family may have briefly migrated to Missouri, only to return to Kansas between 1878 and 1882, settling in Chatauqua Springs, Chatauqua County. Between March and December 1885, the family left Kansas one last time, bound for what would be their final destination – the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas - a distance of roughly 125 miles.
How Did They Travel? Most pioneers traveled in a Conestoga wagon or a spring wagon made of hickory, oak or maple. Many chose oxen to pull their wagons because of their strength, and would use up to four oxen per wagon. The father would drive the oxen by walking beside the wagon and the women and children would walk behind it much of the time. Most days, they would’ve been able to travel 10 to 15 miles; on rainy or muddy days they might’ve made it just 1 mile! It would’ve taken 5 to 7 days to travel the same distance we can now drive in a single hour! So this 125-mile journey that we could easily drive in 2 hours probably took them at least 8 days...and likely longer.
Fannie’s Tea Set. During one of these moves, young Fannie asked her father’s permission to bring along her child’s tea set. With space being limited, she was told she could not. An ingenious child, Fannie packed her dishes in a pail and secured it to the undercarriage of the wagon. Either her father never discovered the pail or – more likely - he chose to ignore that it was there, as he never spoke a word of it to her and Fannie was able to keep her cherished dishes.

Fannie married CHARLES BENJAMIN (BEN) PRICKETT [b. Monday, February 22, 1875, in Clifty, Carroll County, Arkansas], son of THOMAS JEFFERSON PRICKETT and EDNA THORNBURG, on Sunday, November 27, 1898, in Pleasant Valley, Carroll County, Arkansas.

THE MAX HUNTER COLLECTION
Max Hunter, a traveling salesman from Springfield, Missouri, took his reel-to-reel tape recorder into the hills and backwoods of the Ozarks to preserve the heritage of the region by recording the songs and stories of many generations of Ozark history. These recordings are now part of The Max Hunter Collection, an archive of almost 1,600 Ozark Mountain folksongs recorded between 1956 and 1976.
According to Ed Stilley, a family friend who lived with and cared for Aunt Fannie in her later years, Pat [Prickett] Edstrom worked in a Eureka Springs restaurant where Mr. Hunter happened to stop for a meal one day in 1958. An outgoing and friendly man, Mr. Hunter related his ambition to record and preserve Ozark folk songs and Pat offered that her mother and brother might sing for him.
On Wednesday, February 5, 1958, Mr. Hunter traveled to the home of “Aunt” Fannie Prickett and recorded her singing At the Feast of Belshazzer, Behold the Wayward Boy, Lonesome is the Winter and The Model Church. According to Mr. Hunter’s notes, Fannie was 84 years old at the time and was just getting over a “very bad sick spell.”
Ed recalls that during Mr. Hunter’s interview with Fannie, he asked about her church and the services held. Fannie related a story of coming home from a church revival one autumn evening to find her family home engulfed in flames, eventually burning to the ground.
Mr. Hunter also recorded Fannie’s sister, Lucy [Capps] Quigley, two of Fannie’s children – Dave Prickett and Pat [Prickett] Edstrom, and Ed Stilley.
PASSAGES
After seven children and 36 years of marriage, Ben passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 1935, in Carroll County, Arkansas, 1 month shy of his 60th birthday. He is interred at Beulah Union Cemetery in Carroll County, Arkansas. Fannie passed away nearly 27 years later at the age of 88 years and 2 days on Wednesday, December 6, 1961 in Eureka Springs. She is also interred at Beulah Union Cemetery.
