DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM HENRY (WILL) CAPPS, SR. - Generations No. 2 & 3

WILLIAM HENRY (WILL) CAPPS, SR. (MARSHAL PINKNEY) was born in 18721 in Missouri – probably Cass County. Will was the first child born to Marshal and Mary [Davenport] Capps.

TO ARKANSAS (BY WAY OF KANSAS AND MISSOURI)

Due to his mother’s ongoing battle with tuberculosis, in 1872-73, an infant Will and his parents migrated roughly 125 miles from Cass County, Missouri, to the Flint Hills of Chase County, Kansas, settling in Matfield Green. Around 1877, the still-growing family may have briefly returned to Missouri, only to return to Kansas between 1878 and 1882, settling in Chatauqua Springs, Chatauqua County. Between March and December 1885, the Capps family left Kansas one last time, bound for what would be their final destination – the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. It would’ve taken this band of two adults and five children at least 15 days to traverse the roughly 225 miles to their new home, during which time Will would’ve been about 13 years old.

MARRIAGES and CHILDREN

Will, 24, married FRANCES ORLENA (FANNIE) SAMUEL, 20 [b: Friday, February 4, 1876, in Louisiana], daughter of FIELDING SAMUEL, JR., and CORNELIA LIGON, on Sunday, February 23, 1896, in Carroll County, Arkansas.

Fannie’s Samuel family has been traced to William Samwell who was born in England and immigrated to Virginia by 1660.

Samuel Ancestry and their Connection to our Cappses. The Samuel family has been traced to Reuben Samuel, Sr. (born ~1740), of Virginia. Reuben, Sr., migrated to Kentucky after the birth of his first child, Reuben Samuel, Jr. (1761-1832) - Fannie’s great-grandfather. By one account, Will Capps’ paternal grandparents migrated with the Fielding Samuel, Sr., family from Owen County, Kentucky, into Clay County, Missouri. The Samuel family settled in northern Clay County around the Centerville and Greenville areas, and the Cappses are said to have settled in and around the Liberty area of Clay County (although I’ve been unable to substantiate this claim through census or other records). Fannie’s family may have then migrated from Clay County, Missouri, to Louisiana and then on to Madison County, Arkansas, shortly after 1875.

Children of WILL CAPPS and FANNIE SAMUEL are:

i. SAMUEL MARSHALL (SAM) CAPPS, b. January 10, 1897, in Clifty, Madison County, Arkansas; d. January 15, 1967 in Seminole County, Oklahoma.

ii. WILLIAM HENRY (HENRY) CAPPS, b. August 8, 1898, in Clifty, Madison County, Arkansas; d. December 25, 1974, in Murray County, Oklahoma.

iii. LORIS CORNELIUS CAPPS, b. December 20, 1906, in Oklahoma; d. July 31, 1992, in Bakersfield, Kern County, California.

iv. LIVING CAPPS.

CLAIMING A HOMESTEAD

As part of the 1862 Homestead Act, Will acquired 160 acres of land in Carroll County, Arkansas, at Township 19 North/Range 27 West, Section 23, on June 8, 1901 (see facsimile of this document).

Sometime between 1902 and 1906 Will and Fannie gave up their family farm in search of a better life, and migrated with their still-growing family to Hughes County, Oklahoma, where they remained for the rest of their lives.

PASSAGES

Fannie [Samuel] Capps passed away at the age of 50 years on Saturday, July 24, 19266, in Hughes County, Oklahoma, reportedly from a goiter (thyroid condition). Will passed away 28 years later in 1954 from “old age” at about the age of 82 years old in Hughes County, Oklahoma. Fannie and Will are interred at Holdenville Cemetery in Holdenville, Hughes County, Oklahoma.

Many of Fannie’s Samuel family members are buried in a large, old Samuel family cemetery at Clifty, Madison County, Arkansas.

FANNIE’S TIES TO THE JAMES FAMILY

Fannie Samuel and Jesse James were step-cousins, though Jesse was born 29 years before Fannie and died when she was just 6 years old. Her father, Fielding Samuel, Jr., and Jesse’s stepfather, Dr. Reuben Samuel, were half-brothers.

After migrating to Missouri with our Capps family, the Samuels settled in the Kearney area. Jesse’s mother, Zerelda Elizabeth (Zee) Cole James Simms, having been twice widowed, married Reuben, her third and last husband, on September 26, 1855, in Clay County, Missouri, when Jesse was just 7 years old. The Jesse James Farm and Museum is located in Kearney. This is where Jesse was born in 1847 and where he and his three James siblings (including his brother, Frank) and four Samuel half-siblings were raised.

Frank and Jesse talked of forming a gang with Cole Younger, but Jesse wasn’t with them when they committed their first robbery in February 1866 at Liberty, Clay County, Missouri (reportedly the home of our Capps family). Jesse didn’t join them until October 1866. Frank and Cole Younger got about $57,000 from the Liberty job. It wasn’t until March 1867 that they pulled their first job together. They tried to rob a bank at Savannah. All three aimed at the bank president, but all were poor shots and only one bullet barely grazed him. This job failed.

On Monday, January 25, 1875, Pinkerton detectives laid siege to the Samuel home. Jesse and Frank got away. During the shootout, a device similar to a Molotov cocktail was thrown into the home and hit Jesse’s mother, Zee Samuel. Zee lost most of her right arm and Jesse’s half-brother, Archie Samuel, was killed...he wasn’t quite 9 years old.
