DESCENDANTS OF LUCY ANN CAPPS - Generations 2, 3, and 4

LUCY ANN CAPPS - Generation No. 2

LUCY ANN CAPPS (MARSHAL PINKNEY) was born Wednesday, June 7, 1882, in Chatauqua Springs, Chatauqua County, Kansas. She was the fifth child and second daughter of Marshal and Mary [Davenport] Capps.

After having migrated from Missouri to Kansas, the family left Kansas between March and December 1885 bound for what would be their final destination – the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.

MARRIAGE and CHILDREN

Lucy married JAMES QUIGLEY [b: Monday, April 27, 1874, in Arkansas] on Thursday, October 17, 1901, in Carroll County, Arkansas, likely the son of JAMES FRANKLIN QUIGLEY and MALINDA DOUGHTY. James’ Quigley family has been traced to his grandparents, James and Mary Quigley of Pennsylvania.

Children of LUCY CAPPS and JAMES QUIGLEY are:

i. JONATHAN WILSON (JOHN) QUIGLEY, b. September 29, 1902, in Carroll County, Arkansas; d. November 7, 1989, in Butte County, California

v. DOROTHIE ELLEN QUIGLEY, b. Monday, August 18, 1919, in Carroll County, Arkansas; d. Friday, August 24, 1923, probably in Carroll County, Arkansas; buried at Beulah Union Cemetery, Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas.

vi. LIVING QUIGLEY.

THE MAX HUNTER COLLECTION

Max Hunter, a traveling salesman from Springfield, took his reel-to-reel tape recorder into the hills and backwoods of the Ozarks to preserve the heritage of the region by recording the songs and stories of many generations of Ozark history. These recordings are now part of The Max Hunter Collection, an archive of almost 1,600 Ozark Mountain folksongs recorded between 1956 and 1976.

Mr. Hunter recorded Lucy Quigley singing The Butcher Boy, The House Carpenter, Red River Shore, and Willie Boy. He also recorded Lucy’s sister Fannie [Capps] Prickett, nephew Dave Prickett, and niece Pat [Prickett] Edstrom.

PASSAGES

James passed away on Friday, April 3, 1942, in Carroll County, Arkansas, after more than 40 years of marriage. He is interred at Beulah Union Cemetery, Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas. Lucy passed away on Friday, March 15, 1968, in Eureka Springs; she, too, is interred at Beulah Union Cemetery.

JONATHAN WILSON (JOHN) QUIGLEY - Generation No. 3

JONATHAN WILSON (JOHN) QUIGLEY
(LUCY ANN CAPPS, MARSHAL PINKNEY) was born Monday, September 29, 1902, probably in Carroll County, Arkansas. John was the first child of James and Lucy [Capps] Quigley.

MARRIAGES and CHILDREN

John married LENA MURPHY [b. Tuesday, September 4, 1906, in Arkansas], daughter of ALLEN L. MURPHY and NANCY EVALINE HAMON, on April 22, 1924 in Carroll County, Arkansas.

Lake Ancestry and Connection to My Hamon Family. Lena’s maternal grandparents, William Hamon and Isabelle Combs, each descend from well-researched families. William Hamon’s line descends from Robert Hamon [b. 1524] and Agnes Penton [b. 1528], both born in Scarning, County Norfolk, England.

Isabelle [Combs] Hamon descends from Archdale Combs [b. 1625 in Rappahannock County, Virginia] and Elizabeth Butler [b. 1625 in Old Lancaster County, Virginia]. There’s a strong possibility that this line continues to John Combe [b. 1563/4 in St. Antholin Parish in Budge Row, London, England] and Margaret Archdale [b. 1569 in Budge Row, London, England]. Josiah Combs documents this connection in his book The Combses Genealogy; other researchers are doubtful of the connection, at least as documented in this book. As always, there’s more research to be done.

John was the first cousin of my grandfather, Lester Capps; his mother (Lucy [Capps] Quigley) was the sister of Lester’s father (John Capps). Lena was Lester’s first cousin, once removed; her grandmother (Lula Hamon) was the sister of Lester’s maternal grandfather (Spencer Hamon).

Children of JOHN QUIGLEY and LENA MURPHY are:

i. DAUGHTER QUIGLEY.

ii. DAUGHTER QUIGLEY.

iii. DALE QUIGLEY, b. June 28, 1926, in Arkansas.

iv.DARCEY QUIGLEY, b.~1928 in Arkansas.
