DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON (JEFF) CAPPS - Generations 2 & 3

THOMAS JEFFERSON (JEFF) CAPPS - Generation No. 2

THOMAS JEFFERSON (JEFF) CAPPS (MARSHAL PINKNEY) was born Saturday, August 5, 1893, in Madison County, Arkansas. Jeff was the eighth (and last) child and sixth son born to Marshal and Mary [Davenport] Capps.

MARRIAGES and CHILDREN

Jeff married ROZETTA MAY (ZETTA) HAMON [b. Tuesday, October 31, 1893, in Arkansas], daughter of SPENCER HAMON, SR., and EVALINE CAUDILL, on Saturday, July 6, 1912, in Arkansas. Zetta is the sister of Etta [Hamon] Capps, who was married to Jeff’s older brother, John Capps. (See John Nicholas Capps’ family page.)

Hamon Ancestry. Zetta’s paternal grandparents, William Hamon and Isabelle Combs, each descend from well-researched families. William Hamon’s line descends from Robert Hamon [b. 1524] and Agnes Penton [b. 1528], both born in Scarning, County Norfolk, England.

Isabelle [Combs] Hamon descends from Archdale Combs [b. 1625 in Rappahannock County, Virginia] and Elizabeth Butler [b. 1625 in Old Lancaster County, Virginia]. There’s a strong possibility that this line continues to John Combe [b. 1563/4 in St. Antholin Parish in Budge Row, London, England] and Margaret Archdale [b. 1569 in Budge Row, London, England]. Josiah Combs documents this connection in his book The Combses Genealogy; other researchers are doubtful of the connection, at least as documented in this book. As always, there’s more research to be done.

Zetta’s maternal grandparents, Abner Caudill and Mary Naoma Hammonds, also descend from well-researched families. Abner Caudill’s line descends from Stephen Caudill [b. ~1680] and Mary Elizabeth Fields [b. 1698] both born in Scotland. Stephen arrived in America about 1700 and settled in Virginia. Mary Hammonds descends from Robert Hamon and Agnes Penton, as does Zetta’s father, Spencer Hamon.

Evaline Caudill Hamon died in 1909. Spencer Hamon married Laura Page, a “mail order bride.” Laura was quite a lady - very elegant. She forbade her stepdaughters, Etta and Rozetta, from marrying in to the Capps family, whom she felt were of a lower social status than the Hamons. Regardless, the girls (thankfully!) ignored their stepmother and married their Capps boys.

Children of JEFF CAPPS and ZETTA HAMON are:

i. VIRGIL ELMER CAPPS, b. January 6, 1913 in California Township, Madison County, Arkansas; d. April 14, 2007 in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas.

ii. VIOLA CAPPS, b. ~1915 in California Township, Madison County, Arkansas.

iii. ORVILLE CLYDE CAPPS, b. June 2, 1917 in California Township, Madison County, Arkansas; d. August 28, 2003 in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas.

iv. IVA CAPPS, b. August 5, 1919, in Arkansas; d. October 8, 1994, in Arkansas.

v. FAY GILBERT CAPPS, b. June 9, 1923, in Arkansas; d. March 5, 1990.

vi. LIVING CAPPS, b. ~1926 in Arkansas.

THE DUST BOWL

In the 1930s, drought and over-farming led to environmental disaster in the Great Plains of the United States. Windstorms blew away the overworked topsoil and the region came to be known as the Dust Bowl.

Families abandoned their farms and fled west looking for work. Many became migrant workers on California farms. Laborers on these farms performed backbreaking work for little pay, and lived in poor conditions in migrant worker camps.

About 1938-39, Jeff and Zetta, along with John and Etta [Hamon] Capps, migrated west from Arkansas and made their homes in California’s fertile Central Valley, settling in Tracy, San Joaquin County, California.

Why did so many of the refugees pin their hopes for a better life on California? One reason was that the State’s mild climate allowed for a long growing season and a diversity of crops with staggered planting and harvesting cycles. For people whose lives had revolved around farming, this seemed like an ideal place to look for work.

California was emphatically not the Promised Land of the migrants’ dreams. Although the weather was comparatively balmy and farmers’ fields were bountiful with produce, Californians also felt the effects of the Depression.

Jeff and Zetta eventually returned to Arkansas; John and Etta remained in California.

PASSAGES

Each year, Beulah Union Cemetery held a cleanup day and Zetta always participated. She is said to have suffered a heart attack as she cleaned her father’s gravesite in May 1973. Zetta collapsed onto her father’s grave and died at Beulah Union Cemetery, Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas, at the age of 79.

Jeff passed nearly 2 years later in March 1975 at 81 years old, probably in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas.

Both are interred at Beulah Union Cemetery.

Intermarrying between local families in hollows of Arkansas was quite common, so it’s not unusual that our Cappses and Quigleys are allied in more ways than one. Howard’s father William D. Quigley is the brother of James Quigley, husband of Lucy Ann Capps, sister of Viola’s father Thomas Jefferson Capps. In other words: Viola married her uncle’s nephew, but this was her uncle by marriage so she and her husband weren't blood related.

Children of VIOLA CAPPS and HOWARD QUIGLEY are not known by this researcher at this time.

PASSAGES

After nearly 63 years of marriage, Howard passed away Wednesday, March 13, 1996, in Goddard, Sedgwick County, Kansas. Viola followed Saturday, January 30, 1999, also in Goddard, Kansas.

Howard’s marriage to Living was his second; he was first married to Joyce Colleen Murphy before 1952.

Hoover Ancestry and My Hamon Family Connection. Howard’s sister, Rita Alice Hoover, was married to Curtis Ray Capps, Living's first cousin, once removed. Howard’s Hoover family has been traced to his great-great-grandparents, Martin Hoover (1774-1861) and Sally Bradford (1774-1864).

Through Howard’s maternal grandmother Mary Angeline Curry, the family connects with my Combs family (Martin Hoover, son of Mary Angeline Curry, daughter of Charity Emeline Lane, daughter of Sarah Jane Combs, daughter of Jeremiah C. Combs, son of Mason Combs, Jr., son of Mason Combs, Sr. – my 8th great-grandfather and Rita’s 5th great-grandfather). The Combs line has been traced to Archdale Combs [b.

Rita’s Lugenbeel family has been traced to her great-great-grandfather, Jacob Lookingbeel [b. 1810 in Maryland], and her second great-grandparents, Jehu Taylor [b. 1835 in West Virginia; d. 1865 in South Carolina] and Asenette A. Eseley [b. 1835, d. in South Carolina].

DESCENDANTS OF JOHN NICHOLAS CAPPS - Generations 2, 3, and 4

JOHN NICHOLAS CAPPS - Generation No. 2

JOHN NICHOLAS CAPPS (MARSHAL PINKNEY) was born on Sunday, December 23, 1888, in Clifty, Madison County, Arkansas. He was the seventh child and fifth son of Marshal and Mary [Davenport] Capps.

MARRIAGE and CHILDREN

John married ETTA BERNETTA HAMON [b. Saturday, March 4, 1891, in Oak Grove, Carroll County, Arkansas], daughter of SPENCER HAMON, SR., and EVALINE CAUDILL, on Sunday, March 20, 1910, in Carroll County, Arkansas.

Etta was named for her father’s infant sister, Etta Bernetta Hamon, who was just 8 months old at her death in 1890--just 5 months before our Etta’s birth.

Hamon Ancestry. Etta’s paternal grandparents, William and Isabelle [Combs] Hamon, each descend from well-researched families. William’s line descends from Robert Hamon [b. 1524] and Agnes Penton [b. 1528], both born in Scarning, County Norfolk, England.

Isabelle descends from Archdale Combs [b. 1625 in Rappahannock County, Virginia] and Elizabeth Butler [b. 1625 in Old Lancaster County, Virginia]. There’s a strong possibility that this line continues back to John Combe [b. 1563/4 in St. Antholin Parish] and Margaret Archdale [b. 1569], both born in Budge Row, London, England. Josiah Combs documents this connection in his book The Combses Genealogy; other researchers are doubtful of the connection, at least as documented in this book. As always, there’s more research to be done.

Etta’s maternal grandparents, Abner Caudill and Mary Naoma Hammonds, also descend from well-researched families. Abner’s line descends from Stephen Caudill [b. ~1680] and Mary Elizabeth Fields [b. 1698], both born in Scotland. Stephen arrived in America ~1700 and settled in Virginia. Mary Hammonds descends from Robert Hamon and Agnes Penton, as does Etta’s father Spencer Hamon.

Evaline [Caudill] Hamon died in 1909.
Spencer married (2) Laura Page, who has been described to this researcher as a “mail order bride.” Laura was reportedly quite a lady - very refined. She forbade her stepdaughters, Etta and Rozetta, from marrying in to the Capps family, whom she felt to be of a lower social standing than the Hamons. Luckily for this researcher — at least where Etta is concerned — the girls ignored their stepmother and married their Capps boys.

Children of JOHN CAPPS and ETTA HAMON are:

i. LESTER EVERETT CAPPS, b. March 30, 1911, in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas; d. January 3, 2004, in Manteca, San Joaquin County, California.

John purchased 40 acres in Madison County, Arkansas, at Township 19 North/Range 27 West, Section 23, on May 19, 1916 (see the facsimile of the original document).

MILITARY DRAFTS

John registered for the WWI draft sometime in 1917 or 1918 in Madison County, Arkansas; however, he never served in the military.

About 1938-39, John and Etta - both nearing their 50s - migrated west from Arkansas with their son and daughter-in-law, Lester and Bessie [Hobbs] Capps, and made their homes in California’s fertile Central Valley, settling in Tracy, San Joaquin County, California.

John built a Pentecostal church on Larch Road in north Tracy, where he ministered to a growing congregation. His son, Lester, continued in his place, eventually passing on the ministry to John’s grandson.

PASSAGES

Etta passed away 1 month shy of her 64th birthday on Friday, February 4, 1955, in French Camp, San Joaquin County, California, preceding her husband in death by 16 years. The cause of her death was liver cancer. She's interred at Tracy Public Cemetery in Tracy.

John Nicholas Capps (a.k.a. “Grandpa John”) passed away at the age of 82 years on Monday, March 15, 1971, also in Manteca. He was interned at Tracy Public Cemetery on Friday, March 19, 1971, where he rests by his wife of more than 44 years. John was survived by 9 children, 27 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

LESTER EVERETT CAPPS - Generation No. 3

LESTER EVERETT CAPPS (JOHN NICHOLAS, MARSHAL PINKNEY) was born Saturday, March 30, 1911, in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas.

MARRIAGES/PARTNERS AND CHILDREN

Lester was close to his older cousin, Dave Prickett (ANNA FRANCES, MARSHAL PINKNEY) who was married to Lela [Bennett] Prickett. Dave had a life-long affair with his wife’s younger sister, Verda Bennett. When Verda became pregnant with Dave's child, he convinced Lester to marry her without disclosing their affair or the pregnancy.

Lester married (1) VERDA L. BENNETT [b. July 19, 1916 in Clifty, Carroll County, Arkansas], daughter of THOMAS J. BENNETT and DELLA PRESLEY, in Arkansas.

Child born to VERDA BENNETT during this marriage is:

LIVING CAPPS.

This marriage was obviously doomed from the start, and the couple soon separated. A blood test later proved that Lester was not the biological father of Verda's child, and the marriage was annulled. Verda and Dave continued their clandestine relationship, which also produced a second child. (See David Mason Prickett, son of Anna Frances Prickett.)

Lester married (2) BESSIE MAY HOBBS [b. Friday, March 21, 1919, in Toronto, Woodson County, Kansas], daughter of FREDERICK HOBBS and EDNA BLEVINS, on Thursday, July 26, 1934, in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas.

Hobbs Ancestry. Bessie’s paternal ancestors are well researched and documented, having been traced to Nathaniel Hobbs (~1675-1727) of Kirtling, County Cambridgeshire, England. Vincent Hobbs, Sr. (1720-~1808), grandson of Nathaniel, was the first in this line to come to America. Vincent, 15, and his brothers arrived in the U.S. in 1735 through the Port of Dover, Delaware, and settled in Washington County, Virginia.

Bessie’s maternal ancestors can be traced to her fifth great-grandparents, Daniel Blevins, Sr. (1710-~1771) and Sarah Belcher. Daniel was born in Rhode Island and relocated to Virginia. The family migrated from Virginia into Kentucky and Kansas.

Children of LESTER CAPPS and BESSIE HOBBS are:

i. LIVING CAPPS.

ii. LIVING CAPPS.

iii. LIVING CAPPS.

iv. LIVING CAPPS.

THE DUST BOWL

According to Lester, the family left Kansas during the Dust Bowl. Thirteen adults and children piled in to a Model-A Ford pickup truck (four in front, nine in back) along with all of their belongings!
They made their home in California’s fertile San Joaquin Valley.

PASSAGES

On Saturday, June 1, 1978, Bessie passed away at the age of 59 years, 2 months and 11 days, due to complications of pneumonia after a long battle with an undiagnosed illness in Stockton, San Joaquin County, California. Because she died in a hospital, no autopsy was performed to determine the exact nature of her mysterious illness. Bessie and Lester had been married for nearly 44 years at the time of her death. Bessie was laid to rest at Tracy Public Cemetery in Tracy.

New Beginnings. Lester married (2) GERTRUDE MARIE (GERTIE) RICE [b. Sunday, June 8, 1913 in Halsey, Linn County, Oregon] on Tuesday, September 26, 1978, in Tijuana, Mexico. This was also Gertie’s second marriage, her first husband having passed away. The couple made their home at Gertie’s small ranch in Manteca, San Joaquin County, California.
Gertie passed away Saturday, November 6, 1993, in Manteca. Lester and Gertie had been married for 15 years.

Lester passed away Saturday, January 3, 2004, in Manteca at 92 years old. He was interred next to his beloved Bessie at Tracy Public Cemetery.

Having never remarried, Lester’s first wife Verda [Bennett] Capps passed away on December 6, 2006 in Arkansas at the age of 90 years old.

John was the first cousin of my grandfather, Lester Capps; his mother (Lucy [Capps] Quigley) was the sister of Lester’s father (John Capps). Lena was Lester’s first cousin, once removed; her grandmother (Lula Hamon) was the sister of Lester’s maternal grandfather (Spencer Hamon).

New Beginnings. Other than a marriage record, this researcher has been unable to find any records pertaining to Della Tarry or Della Capps, though it’s almost certain Della would’ve remarried after Julious’ untimely death as she would’ve only been about 20 years old at the time she was widowed.

DESCENDANTS OF ANNA FRANCES (FANNIE) CAPPS - Generations 2 and 3

ANNA FRANCES (FANNIE) CAPPS - Generation No. 2

ANNA FRANCES (FANNIE) CAPPS (MARSHAL PINKNEY) was born Thursday, December 4, 1873, in Matfield Green, Chase County, Kansas. The second child and first daughter of Marshal and Mary [Davenport] Capps, Fannie was born in the Flint Hills of Kansas.

TO ARKANSAS (BY WAY OF MISSOURI AND KANSAS)

Around 1877, the still-growing family may have briefly migrated to Missouri, only to return to Kansas between 1878 and 1882, settling in Chatauqua Springs, Chatauqua County. Between March and December 1885, the family left Kansas one last time, bound for what would be their final destination – the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas - a distance of roughly 125 miles.

How Did They Travel? Most pioneers traveled in a Conestoga wagon or a spring wagon made of hickory, oak or maple. Many chose oxen to pull their wagons because of their strength, and would use up to four oxen per wagon. The father would drive the oxen by walking beside the wagon and the women and children would walk behind it much of the time. Most days, they would’ve been able to travel 10 to 15 miles; on rainy or muddy days they might’ve made it just 1 mile! It would’ve taken 5 to 7 days to travel the same distance we can now drive in a single hour! So this 125-mile journey that we could easily drive in 2 hours probably took them at least 8 days...and likely longer.

Fannie’s Tea Set. During one of these moves, young Fannie asked her father’s permission to bring along her child’s tea set. With space being limited, she was told she could not. An ingenious child, Fannie packed her dishes in a pail and secured it to the undercarriage of the wagon. Either her father never discovered the pail or – more likely - he chose to ignore that it was there, as he never spoke a word of it to her and Fannie was able to keep her cherished dishes.

MARRIAGE and CHILDREN

Fannie married CHARLES BENJAMIN (BEN) PRICKETT [b. Monday, February 22, 1875, in Clifty, Carroll County, Arkansas], son of THOMAS JEFFERSON PRICKETT and EDNA THORNBURG, on Sunday, November 27, 1898, in Pleasant Valley, Carroll County, Arkansas.

Children of FANNIE CAPPS and BEN PRICKETT are:

i. HERBERT DANIEL PRICKETT, b. Thursday, November 30, 1899, in Hogscald Hollow, Carroll County, Arkansas; d. Sunday, December 3, 1899, in Hogscald Hollow, Carroll County, Arkansas; interred at Beulah Union Cemetery, Carroll County, Arkansas.

ii. MABEL SYLVIA PRICKETT, b. November 13, 1900, in Hogscald Hollow, Carroll County, Arkansas; d. April 20, 2000, in Carroll County, Arkansas.

iii. DAVID MASON (DAVE) PRICKETT, b. August 16, 1903, in Hogscald Hollow, Carroll County, Arkansas; d. May 23, 1993, in Clifty, Madison County, Arkansas.

iv. MARY ETHEL (ETHEL) PRICKETT, b. December 2, 1905, in Hogscald Hollow, Carroll County, Arkansas; d. October 1, 1978, in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas.

v. AMANDA GENEVA (MANDY) PRICKETT, b. August 3, 1908, in Hogscald Hollow, Carroll County, Arkansas; d. November 6, 1986, in Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas.

vi. LUCY MINERVA (PAT) PRICKETT, b. September 15, 1912, in Hogscald Hollow, Carroll County, Arkansas; d. July 25, 1973, in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas; interred at Beulah Union Cemetery, Carroll County, Arkansas.

vii. JAMES WALTER (WALTER) PRICKETT, b. October 8, 1914, in Hogscald Hollow, Carroll County, Arkansas; d. July 31, 1940, in Hogscald Hollow, Carroll County, Arkansas.

THE MAX HUNTER COLLECTION

Max Hunter, a traveling salesman from Springfield, Missouri, took his reel-to-reel tape recorder into the hills and backwoods of the Ozarks to preserve the heritage of the region by recording the songs and stories of many generations of Ozark history. These recordings are now part of The Max Hunter Collection, an archive of almost 1,600 Ozark Mountain folksongs recorded between 1956 and 1976.

According to Ed Stilley, a family friend who lived with and cared for Aunt Fannie in her later years, Pat [Prickett] Edstrom worked in a Eureka Springs restaurant where Mr. Hunter happened to stop for a meal one day in 1958. An outgoing and friendly man, Mr. Hunter related his ambition to record and preserve Ozark folk songs and Pat offered that her mother and brother might sing for him.

On Wednesday, February 5, 1958, Mr. Hunter traveled to the home of “Aunt” Fannie Prickett and recorded her singing At the Feast of Belshazzer, Behold the Wayward Boy, Lonesome is the Winter and The Model Church. According to Mr. Hunter’s notes, Fannie was 84 years old at the time and was just getting over a “very bad sick spell.”

Ed recalls that during Mr. Hunter’s interview with Fannie, he asked about her church and the services held. Fannie related a story of coming home from a church revival one autumn evening to find her family home engulfed in flames, eventually burning to the ground.

Mr. Hunter also recorded Fannie’s sister, Lucy [Capps] Quigley, two of Fannie’s children – Dave Prickett and Pat [Prickett] Edstrom, and Ed Stilley.

PASSAGES

After seven children and 36 years of marriage, Ben passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 1935, in Carroll County, Arkansas, 1 month shy of his 60th birthday. He is interred at Beulah Union Cemetery in Carroll County, Arkansas. Fannie passed away nearly 27 years later at the age of 88 years and 2 days on Wednesday, December 6, 1961 in Eureka Springs. She is also interred at Beulah Union Cemetery.
